Shaang Xi Noodles House, Bandar Sunway [Non-Halal]

Recently, I have been really craving some China Chinese food. Especially food around the Shaan Xi province (context: Shaan Xi province is at the Northwest province of China. Heard of the terracotta armies? The terracotta armies were discovered in Shaan Xi Province, in Xi An city) where food is heavier in flavours. Lamb meat is commonly used in their dishes there, and food is often cooked with different types of spices, such as cumin & Szechuan peppercorn.

Chewy noodles, tossed together with hot chilli oil infused with spice and topped with homey side dishes.
It might be because I've been spending a lot of time watching videos about street food in Shaan Xi province, or just me yearning to change up my routine/what I usually eat,  but it seems like we won't be able to travel anytime soon, and hence, I've been on the lookout for food places that serves Shaan Xi food.
A quick Google search led me to Shaang Xi Noodles House at Bandar Sunway. Shaan Xi Noodle House is located right opposite of Sunway College, on the same row as myBurgerLab. Yes, parking there is certainly an issue, especially in the day time on weekdays.
The interior - bamboo furniture and walls are plastered with different facts about Shaan Xi province. There were big round table that could accommodate a bigger group as well.

The Menu

The menu is in mandarin, you might need to use Google translate to help decipher the menu if you can't read mandarin, unfortunately. One is required to scan the QR code on the table and submit their orders online to minimise contact with the service staffs.

You may choose the types of noodles (hand-pulled ramen/spinach noodles/Shaang Xi pulled noodles), and the spiciness level when you're ordering.

Prices are okay - a bowl of noodles is priced between RM10-20, depending on the toppings you choose.
Side note: loving their cutlery sets. Wonder where they got them from.

The Food

油泼面 + 番茄鸡蛋 + 炸肉 RM15.90
(Noodles tossed in chilli oil, topped with egg & tomatoes + minced pork)
Noodles type: Hand-pulled ramen | Spiciness level: Less spicy

I wanted to order the Shaang Xi noodles but because it was my first time navigating through the online ordering system, I didn't realise that I ordered the hand-pulled ramen, which was the default option. Oh well

I opted for less spicy because, well you can still salvage it if it's less spicy by adding more chilli, but once you exceed your spiciness threshold, there's no return!

After giving it a little tossy toss and a sampler, I can conclude that...less spicy stood true to its name :P I added extra chilis, even though my spice tolerance is low.

The noodles are all made fresh on the day itself and were springy and bouncy, and coated in the fragrant chilli oil The portion was generous, definitely more than what I am used to eating - in the end, I couldn't finish the bowl of noodles, it felt as though the bowl of noodles was bottomless.

Next time around, I think I might consider either going for just two toppings rather than three or share a bowl of noodles with someone. Taste-wise, it was homey. Love the flavours from the chilli oil, though think I could have gone one step higher on the spiciness level! Would definitely prefer it spicier and "hotter", with more "hot chili oil" fragrance laced with the strong flavours of Szechuan peppercorn

--
Would love to be back to try out their Shaan Xi hand-pulled noodles & bump up the spiciness level next time around!

Ending Random Blurb:
This is the video that got me really interested to dig deeper about Shaan Xi food btw ;D
Look at how stretchy the noodles are! And I can smell the (imaginary) aromatics when he poured the scalding hot oil into the bowl of noodles from here!

Yeah Cuisine, Ampang [Non-Halal] - Hearty Porky Dishes!

Anyone up for a hearty porky affair? Rice bowls with different porky toppings?

Chances are, you've come across a video/photo of this place on social media - I remember the porky dishes from this place just being all over my social media feed once upon a time.

Yeah Cuisine is tucked away at the fringe of Ampang, in an area that sort of reminded me of my hometown. The location felt a little odd to me because, despite its close proximity to KL City, it felt as though we were in a village somewhere out of KL.

This place went viral for a while back in 2018/201, reasons being its affordable price, and back then dine-in customers are entitled to free flow of pork lard. And let me tell you it's not just any pork lard but DIFFERENT FLAVOURED pork lard (have to emphasise it here - because I remember loading my bowl of rice with loads of different flavoured pork lard!). Was hoping that we can still get free flow of pork lard but during my visit recently, the free flow pork lard station is nowhere to be seen :( Oh well, my cholesterol level is probably thankful for that.

One of their signature dishes is their pork patty, which is available in original flavour, and other flavours such as pickled veggies, salted fish, dried squids and so on. You may opt to have it with rice or noodles as well.
From their Facebook page
You may browse their full menu with the prices on their Facebook page.

The Food

Pork Patty Rice RM9.90 (Original)
Rice served with pork patty, pork lard, minced pork & leafy greens
This dish has a really homey feel to it :) I thought that the portion is pretty decent for the price. I initially thought I wouldn't be able to finish the whole thing but I did in the end because I love how flavourful the minced pork was. I find that the pork patty was a little on the chewy/tough side though, would prefer if it's more tender -- think I'd go for the flavoured one next time as I find it a little too bland
Nasi Lemak x3 Non Halal RM15.90
Nasi Lemak served with sambal pork lard, curry pork skin & pork rendang. x3 Non-Halal because it is served with three different kind of pork!

The Nasi Lemak is a recent new addition to Yeah Cuisine menu. This definitely was the star dish of the night, it made the Pork Patty Rice feel so pale in comparison :p But simply because the porky dishes served with the nasi lemak is ladened with spice. I absolutely loved the pork rendang & sambal pork lard! Though be warned, the sambal pork lard can be a little spicy for some. I am not really a fan of pork skin curry so I can't comment much about it.

If you love a porky affair, you'd want to consider giving this place a try if you're around the area :) This is one place that I would want to come back for more.

New Peng Wah 新槟华家乡饭店 , Damansara Jaya

Looking for a place that serves homey Chinese food?
New Peng Wah was established in 1970 at Taman Paramount by a team of husband and wife. Fast forward to present, the nephew of the founder, Paul, has since took over and expanded the business. New Peng Wah currently has three outlets throughout Klang Valley, one in Damansara Jaya, one in Taman Desa, and the other one in Kota Kemuning.
Occupying two shop lots, New Peng Wah has a clean and spacious interior which can accommodate a big crowd. This place gets quite crowded on weekends after 7.30pm though !
Signature Lala Soup RM 16.00 (Small) ; RM 48.00 (Extra Large)
A flavourful and nourishing bowl of soup cooked with succulent lala imported from the Philippines, wolf berries (Kei Chee), Dong Quai and ginger. The soup has the right balance of spiciness and flavours, I couldn't help it but to reach our for a second helping!
Signature Deep Fried Ma Yau (Senangin) RM 6.00 for 100g
The fish was deep fried till crunchy perfection, served with soy sauce and garnished with ginger and coriander. A satisfying fresh and meaty fish dish.

Signature Potato Fried Pork RM 25.00 Thinly sliced potatoes stir-fried with garlic and pork, cooked in a dark soy sauce base sauce. One of New Peng Wah's signature dishes, and also my favourite dish of the night. A perfect comfort food to go with rice!
Signature Sliced Pork with Nyonya Sauce RM28
Pork slices, brinjal and okra cooked in nyonya sauce. The nyonya sauce was packed with a kick of spiciness and sourness. Would prefer to have seafood to go with this sauce though.
Claypot Hua Tiew Wine Chicken RM30
Tender chunks of chicken cooked in Hua Tiew wine based dark sauce, cooked with ginger and garlic. Everyone was fighting was the last bite of this dish - the chicken was really flavourful and the sauce was fragrant, with a hint of sweetness. A must-try at New Peng Wah!
Homestyle Claypot Brinjal RM 28
Brinjal cooked with minced prawns, minced pork, sweet pea and shrimp paste served with crunchy fried fu-zhuk skin on the side. A home-style dish originating from Temerloh, Pahang. Do give this dish a try if you're feeling adventurous!
Cantonese Style Hor Fun RM18
Another signature at New Peng Wah. Flat rice noodle cooked with sliced pork, squid, vegetable and eggs. Personally, I found this dish tad salty to my liking.

Verdict: My overall dining experience at New Peng Wah was satisfying. Homey, simple yet satisfying homecooked Chinese dishes. Will definitely be back for more!

Ruyi & Lyn, Bangsar Shopping Centre

Ruyi & Lyn at Bangsar Shopping Centre has been taking our social media sites by storm ever since it opened its door to the public a few months back. Photos of Ruyi & Lyn's Instagram-worthy signature dishes and amazing interior has created quite a buzz on social media..

Specializing in contemporary fusion Chinese cuisine, Ruyi & Lyn's kitchen team is lead by head chef: Chef James Ho who hailed all the way from Tampin, Johor. Chef James had spent years honing his culinary skills in top restaurants and hotels around Asia, which includes Singapore, Taiwan, Thailand and Indonesia.

Chef James decided to return to his roots and bring the art of fusion Chinese food to a whole new level by putting together the skills he garnered through his working experiences here at Ruyi & Lyn. Chef James have mastered the art of fusion cooking, blending taste from different cultures , striking a perfect balance between taste and texture in his dishes.
I was really fortunate to be able to sample the best of Chef James's creation during my recent visit to Ruyi & Lyn.

Ruyi & Lyn is located at the 4th floor of Bangsar Shopping Centre. Ruyi & Lyn occupies almost half of the floor to themselves - the restaurant is accessible via certain elevators and lifts only. Head to the third floor of BSC, and walk towards Kitchen Shop. The escalator next to Kitchen shop will take you directly to Ruyi & Lyn, where you'll be greeted by the warm and friendly receptionist.

The lounge area, consisting of the main bar, cigar lounge, private karaoke rooms, and also an outdoor balcony terrace area, equipped with sophisticated lighting, designer furniture to complements its funky state-of-the-art architecture.

A special tapas menu is available for patrons to snack on while sipping on their wine or cocktail at the lounge area.  The lounge area would be a perfect spot for business meetings or a casual gathering with friends and family.
If you think the lounge area was impressive enough, wait till you set foot into the main dining area - We were lead through this dark' tunnel' with illuminating blue neon lights to a automated sliding door...
Be prepared to feel like a superstar, as you stride down the elevated red-carpet platform, with dazzling spot light shinning on you the moment you set foot beyond the automated sliding door into the vast & stylish dining space.

Amazed. Awe-struck. Dazed. Mind-blown. Flabbergasted. You name it. The dining hall was amazing beyond words.

Come for dinner, stay for the music & dance. After 11pm, the main dining area will transform into a dance floor - lights will be dimmed, disco light will be flashing, and guests will be entertained by a professional DJ.
There are four private dining rooms inside the dining hall of Ruyi & Lyn. Each dining room is equipped with karaoke facilities and has its own unique design. Three of the private dining room has one-way glass walls- the walls are transparent from the inside, but opaque outside! Which means patrons can get a glimpse of what is going on at the dining hall, without compromising their privacy.
One of the private rooms even have a pole for pole dancing!
We were lead to the second floor which overlooks the magnificent main dining hall.
Ruyi & Lyn strives to be different in all aspects - the environment, services & of course, food served.
We were served with Pickled Cherry Tomato & Lotus Roots as our appetizer to kick-start our meal. I absolutely loved the Pickled Cherry Tomato - it was bursting with sweet & sour plum flavours. A fresh respite from the usual steamed peanuts served in Chinese restaurants.
Ruyi Sushi Platter
A sampler platter of Hainanese Chicken Rice, Nasi Lemak and Mango Sticky Rice meticulously prepared in the form of sushi.

If you have a social media site account (Facebook, Instagram etc.) I'm pretty sure you would have stumbled upon this beautiful place of daintily crafted sushi on your timeline at least once.

Ruyi sushi platter is a must-order at Ruyi & Lyn! The Hainanese Chicken Rice features a slice of smooth, tender boiled chicken on top of fragrant chicken rice base, finished off with a blob of aromatic ginger garlic chilli sauce ; Nasi Lemak comes with crispy anchovies, roasted peanuts, sweet sambal, tiny fried egg on a bed of fluffy nasi lemak, wrapped with a thinly sliced cucumber ; Mango Sticky Rice features a slice of sweet mango sitting on a bed of sticky, chewy rice.

These petite sushi were able to capture the full fragrance & flavour of the dishes perfectly.
Smoked Little Duck Cones
Smoked duck morsels, roasted pinenuts, sweet corn and edamame wrapped in a thin slice of crispy cone.
Each bite was a delight, in both texture & flavours. The smoky taste of the smoked duck went together so well with the crispy cone. My personal favourite dish at Ruyi and Lyn!
Unicorn’s Bait
Clear sourish-spicy soup with fresh abalone and scallop slices, enoki mushrooms and yao char kwai (Chinese cruellers).
The soup was wonderful - My taste buds first detected a refreshing taste of sourness, followed by a pang of spiciness which came together so well. The addition of the yao char kwai gave the soup a nice crunchy texture. Abalone is air-flown from Australia while the scallops are air-flown from Canada.
Champagne Snowfish Flower
White Cod sliced intricately and deep fried till golden crisp, drizzled with Moet & Chandon Champagne sauce.
The tangy sweet champagne sauce complements the crispy on the outside, soft and flaky on the inside cod fish so perfectly. Personally felt that the codfish could go very well even on its own.
Romance of the Three Kingdoms
Scallops & Prawns, served on a bed on chawanmushi and handmade noodles in Hunan sauce.
The springy noodles absorbed the tangy & spicy Hunan sauce, resulting in flavourful sweet & sour bites with a kick of spiciness.
1 Malaysia Platter
Mini-sized Nasi Lemak Sushi, Hainanese Chicken Rice, Roti Canai & Papadum . This dish perfectly depict the three main races in Malaysia & how they live - the flavours, despite the difference in taste and textures, harmonized together so well, just like how us Malaysian live together in harmony despite the difference in culture & believes.
Summer Breeze
A delight to all cucumber lovers out there - Cucumber Sorbet and yoghurt sitting on a base of biscuity crumble. A refreshing and delightful dessert which wasn't too heavy on the palate.

Chocolate Embrace
Warm chocolate with parfait served with strawberry jam, biscuit crumble & cheese
Warm, rich chocolate oozed out as we sliced through this dainty cake. The cake was made out of 85% dark cocoa so it was just nice for my taste buds - not too sweet nor cloying.

Chef James, the proud creator of all these wonderful dishes, posing at the red carpet.

Verdict: Unique & exclusive fusion Chinese food that is certainly worth a try! Prices are on the steeper side but you get what you paid for. Do make your reservation early if you're planning to drop by as Ruyi & Lyn especially on weekends!
